George Nakashima

American 1905-1990

George Nakashima  was a  furniture designer and craftsman known for his unique and masterful woodworking. He is considered a leading figure in the American Studio Furniture movement and is renowned for his ability to integrate traditional Japanese woodworking techniques with modern design sensibilities.

Nakashima's journey as a furniture maker began when he studied architecture at the University of Washington and later pursued further education in Japan, where he developed a deep appreciation for traditional Japanese craftsmanship. During World War II, Nakashima was interned in a camp for Japanese-Americans, an experience that profoundly influenced his perspective on life and his approach to design.

After the war, Nakashima settled in Pennsylvania and established his own woodworking studio. He embraced the philosophy of "the soul of a tree," which emphasized the natural beauty and inherent characteristics of wood. Nakashima meticulously selected his materials, often using large, rough-hewn slabs of wood with their natural edges and imperfections intact. He believed in allowing the wood's natural grain and knots to be expressed in his designs, showcasing their unique individuality and beauty.

Nakashima's furniture designs are characterized by their simplicity, organic forms, and respect for the natural materials. He handcrafted each piece using traditional joinery techniques, such as dovetail and butterfly joints, and he often left the surfaces of his furniture hand-planed and unpolished to maintain the tactile qualities of the wood.
