Hassan el Glaoui
1924-2018
Hassan el Glaoui (1924-2018) was a Moroccan figurative artist best known for his depictions of galloping horses. He was born into the family of the last Moroccan Pasha, his Excellency Hadj Thami El Mezouari El Glaoui, and he began creating art in secret. He credited intervention from the British Prime Minister Winston Churchill for allowing him to dedicate his long life to visual arts.
For part of his life, el Glaoui lived in France, where he studied at the École des Beaux-Arts and eventually arranged for numerous international exhibitions. His works were exhibited in renowned international galleries including the New York branch of Wildenstein, Paris Galerie Petrides, and the Hammer Galleries in New York. His works are part of the Royal Palace Collection in Fez and the Parliament Collection in Rabat.
A pioneer of contemporary art who was able to find his unique visual vocabulary, el Glaoui earned much praise and recognition on the international art circuit. After his death, el Glaoui’s La Sortie du Roi sold at auction for a record price paid by an African artist in a public sale.
