Berenice Abbott

American, 1898-1991

In 1925, Man Ray introduced Berenice Abbott to Eugène Atget’s photographs. She and Atget became friends and after he died she acquired thousands of prints and negatives from his studio. She went on to publish and promote Atget’s work. And in 1929 when she moved to New York she began to photograph the city with an eye for detail similar to Atget. These photos, which appeared in an exhibition “Changing New York” at the Museum Of The City in 1937 have provided a historical chronicle of many now-destroyed buildings and neighborhoods of Manhattan.
