Shelter Serra

American, b. 1972

California native and New York-based artist Shelter Serra transforms his ideas into a wide range of media from drawing and print to sculpture and video. Contemplating an object’s origin and adapting his materials accordingly, Shelter’s artworks focus on subjects that are loaded with meaning and can also be observed for their aesthetic quality. Ultimately, his artworks give the viewer the opportunity to reflect upon their surroundings.

The nephew of Richard Serra, Shelter grew up amidst the artistic environment of Northern California and San Francisco. He studied studio art at the University of California at Santa Cruz and received a Master of Fine Art from the Rhode Island School of Design. His work has been exhibited nationally and internationally at galleries including Cystem Gallery (Tokyo) and Marlborough Gallery (New York).
