Mind amongst the Spindles: a selection from The Lowell Offering, a miscellany wholly composed by the factory girls of an American city. With an introduction, by the English editor [with a contribution to the introduction from Harriet Martineau]. London: [printed by William Clowes & Sons for ] Charles Knight & Co., 1844. 12mo. (5 ½ x 3 1/2in; 140 x 89mm), pp. [i-]xxiii[-xxiv; 25-]240. One illustration. Contemprary hald sheep over marbled paper-covered boards, the spine divided into six compartments by fasle semi-raised bands outlined with gilt rules, the second compartment letterd in gilt on a black label, the other compartments with repeat all over decoration in blind, ‘L.F.G.’ initials in gilt at the foot of the spine. Provenance: ‘L.F.G. (binding); Caroline Old (inscription on verso of title dated May 13th 1856).
First edition – an American edition followed in 1845, but this small format work is quite rare. A selection of work from the periodical “The Lowell Offering” which made up entirely of the literary work of the women who worked in the mills at Lowell in Massachusetts.
