Historical Note: The Newton Races were held at Old Golborne Heath, near Newton-le-Willows, before this course was replaced by Haydock Park in the late 19th century, where the Old Newton Cup is still run in July. This plate is dedicated to the Lord of the Manor, Thomas Legh MP, and the full name of the race depicted is, in fact, the Lord of the Manor's Gold Cup.
