some losses and flaking paint, toned and dirty surfaces, under blacklight, possible older overpainting observed at the top as well outside the figures, the panel is bowed and the back is chiseled and reinforced with an adhesive

Per Paolo Pignatelli, the painting descended through his family to him.
appears to be a 16th-or early 17th century copy of the much larger 1518 panel in the Galleria Borghese in Rome. there is an partially obscured pencil inscription that appears to be Pignatelli and the number 638; another obscured two part pencil inscription in a different hand above, the second of which is Pignatelli; and a small paper label with a few indecipherable blotches.
