Description

PAMPHLETS, belonging to Zoë THOMSON (1835-1913).  A sammelband containing 9 separate publications, with a typed general title “Pamphlets Presented by Their Authors to Zoe Thomson". [Various locations:] 1851-1887. 9 works in one volume, preceeded by a typed title [1p] and a typed contents list [1p]. 20th-century half leather gilt.

Provenance: Zoë Thomson, nee Skene, of Bishopthorpe, wife of William Thomson, Archbishop of York.

[William Conyngham Plunket, 4th Baron PLUNKET (1828 – 1897)]. “Te Deum Laudamus ! “ [Nov. 26th, 1883], [1-]2-3[-4]pp., inscribed “Mrs. Thompson [sic.] / from the Author / Nov 17/87”.

[George Douglas Campbell, Duke of ARGYLL (1823-1900)]. [“Iona”] [No place but London: no date but 1870]. Pp. [1-]138 + 3 blanks at the end. 2 wood-engraved illustrations/plates, one mounted, the other (with two images on it) folded and inserted. Inscribed “To Mrs Thomson From the Author Sept 1870 By the Duke of Argyll”. Text seems to be complete (an early pre-publication proof and a different setting to the published work which was laid out over 141pages [see the copy presented to Queen Victoria in December 1870]). But the collation starts at B1, so missing title and prelims. as well as some plates. Stitched.

[Lord ROSSLYN]. In Memory of the Dona Mercedes de Bourbon, Queen of Spain, Consort of Alphonso XII. Married January 23rd, 1878. Died June 26th, 1878. Aged 18 years. [a sequence of four sonnets.] [London: Harrison & Sons, undated but 1878?]. Octavo. 6 black-edged leaves, at the foot of the final sonnet is Rosslyn’s facsimile signature, the title inscribed in ink “Mrs Thomson The Palace Bishopthorpe 1880 from a very old friend The Author”
