Based on a Polaroid photograph of his first daughter, Enter Emma reflects Rivers’ ambivalence toward demonstrations of parental price and his tacit acknowledgement of the dangers that menace children. A knife was one of Rivers’ favorite tools at the time, used in numerous collages as well as the cut-out setions of his lithographs.
