These rare images were apparently taken during a visit by the Prince and Princess of Wales to Floors castle, the home of the Duke and Duchess of Roxbburghe. A local photographer, Mackintosh of Kelso, marked the visit by taking these 'en plein air' images. 'J. Mackintosh & Co.' were subsequently allowed to advertise that they were 'landscape and portrait photographers to their R.H. the Prince & Princess of Wales'.
According to the 'Key', the sitters include: the hosts the Duke and Duchess of Roxburghe, H.R.H. the Prince of Wales, H.R.H. the Princess of Wales, H.R.H. Prince Alfred, 'H.S.H. Prince John of Glucksburg' [i.e. Prince Johann of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg], H.S.H. the Princess Hilda [i.e. Princess Hilda of Anhalt-Dessau], and others. (2).
