OLD COLONY STEAMBOAT COMPANY. An unused ten-year ‘Five per cent $1000 Gold Bond Interest Payable June & Dec. Principal due December 1st 1903. [New York & Boston: American Bank Note Co., undated but 1893.] Bond on paper (15 3/8 x 13 7/8 inches; 390 x 353mm), numbered ‘499’, engraved and printed in red and black on the recto and green on the verso. Condition: old folds, otherwise excellent.
“The Old Colony Steamboat Company was chartered in April 1874 to operate freight and passenger steamers between Narragansett Bay and New York, N.Y. While controlled by the Old Colony Railroad, it operated independently. When the New York, New Haven & Hartford Railroad leased the Old Colony Railroad in 1893 it gained control of the steamboat company.
