Attributed to Samuel Lovett Waldo, 1783-1861, and William Jewett, 1790-1874, Portraits of Colonel Townsend Weeks Burtis and his wife Sarah Lowe Burtis, Oil on Panel, circa 1830, initialed W on the sword handle.
Family History: Colonel Burtis came from Oyster Bay, NY and was aide-de-camp to General Lafayette. In New York City, Colonel & Mrs. Burtis lived at 7 State Street in a house attributed to John McComb Jr., 1793-1806. Colonel & Mrs. Burtis were the great, great grandparents of Tracy Haight Griswold, from whose estate the paintings come.
