Edmund Spenser (Walter Crane, Illustrator) .The Faerie Queene. A Poem in Six Books, with the Fragment Mutabilitie. London: George Allen, 1895- 1897. Edited by Thomas J. Wise, in six volumes, one of 1000 copies printed on hand-made paper by Charles Whittingham at the Chiswick Press. Large quarto (29 cm) in creamy-white buckram, gilt decorations by Crane, titles in scarlet, t.e.g.; original pink wraps bound in. Title pages, head and tail pieces by Crane in the best Arts & Crafts style championed by John Ruskin, William Morris, et al. Crane was well-known as an illustrator of books for children, but the Thomas Wise edition of the Faerie Queene was a work on a greater scale. Spines and edges toned as usual, as are pages of text; front hinge of volumes one started. Otherwise quite a lovely set, several volumes apparently unopened.
