Must-See Exhibits in the Neighborhood
Summer in the City, Until July 26th at ACA Galleries
Summer in the City is a multimedia exhibition featuring works spanning over a century by an intergenerational collection of artists who have depicted New York City.
Material World, Until July 26th at Marianne Boesky Gallery
The artists of the Material World exhibition look to the very things that populate their daily lives. Taking as their starting point the things we might find in our homes or offices, the things we wear on our bodies, and the things we absentmindedly toss in the trash, these artists translate the paraphernalia of quotidian living into grand abstractions, intricate assemblages, and riffs on the tropes of art history.
On Landscape, Until August 2nd at Greene Naftali Gallery
On Landscape assembles a multigenerational group of artists adapting the genre to a changing world. These scenes are largely devoid of human presence yet bear subtle signs of habitation: a hedgerow that marks a property line and a slatted fence amidst the trees. As the physical world increasingly recedes behind facsimile, landscape painting endures as a hinge between representation and the restless horizon that evades capture.
