Must-See Exhibits in the Neighborhood

Bumin Kim: The Seasons

Until November 23rd at The Slyvia Wald and Po Kim Gallery

The Seasons reflects Kim’s deep fascination with nature's unpredictable transformations. Each piece delves into the profound shifts in our environment while also tapping into the emotional layers these changes reveal. Through her interpretation of seasonal transitions, Kim aims to preserve personal memories. The fluidity in her line work, the delicate shifts in color, and the movement of her thread — especially notable in her *Landscape* series — evoke the fleeting nature of these memories, encompassing both loss and the potential for renewal. A recurring theme in her work is the contrast between light and dark, symbolizing the dialogue between the ever-changing external world and the internal self.

Nengi Omuku: Wild Things and Perennials

Until October 24th at Kasmin

This exhibition features Nengi Omuku's first solo exhibition in New York, Wild Things and Perennials, with eight oil paintings on the traditional Nigerian textile sanyan. Omuku’s impressionistic landscapes and rich color palettes create enveloping spaces that explore themes of refuge, stillness, and personal narratives from her experiences in Lagos, London, and New York. The installation, with works suspended from the ceiling, invites viewers to reflect and find reprieve while coinciding with her ongoing museum exhibition at Arnolfini in Bristol, UK.

What It Becomes

Until January 12th at the Whitney Museum of American Art

This exhibition highlights drawing as an act of transformation, and showcasing works from the Whitney’s collection that reveals the medium's potential to alter or reclaim images. Artists such as Toyin Ojih Odutola and Wendy Red Star employ erasure techniques to reshape existing forms, while others, such as David Hammons and Maren Hassinger, use their bodies as tools to redefine likeness. The featured pieces engage with the human figure, exploring identity through portraiture, gesture, and the tactile process of drawing.
